Are you wondering what you are going to be able to do with your degree in mathematics? Do you wish that you had a better idea of where you’re headed? Well, if you find yourself in this predicament, know that you don’t have to worry too much. While it may not seem like it at first, a degree in mathematics (along with some other emphasis) can open up a really broad spectrum of professional opportunities. The next time that you hit your used mathematics textbook to get some studying done, know that your work is leading you in the right direction.

Of course, if you couple your used mathematics textbook with a great book on coding, then you can look forward to pursuing a career in software design. Coding is not simply a language that you have to learn; it’s a complex serious of mathematical algorithms that you have to intimately understand. If your math skills are weak, then you are never going to make for a good coder. Of course, because you have been studying math for three or four years, you are going to be able to approach coding without a hitch. Just be sure that you leave yourself enough to get a minor (or a “certification”, as some school call it) in coding, and you are going to be qualified for a much larger pool of jobs.

If coding does not suit you fancy, then you might consider going into finance. Indeed, your used mathematics textbook probably even has a section on finance. If your math skills are top notch, then you are going to be perfect for performing a variety of financing tasks. You can always be relied on to set up a spreadsheet. Likewise, you can always be relied on to assemble and interpret statistics. If your company is running into complicated money trouble, then you can set about explaining everything to them in simple terms. Indeed, every company likes to have a “numbers guy” in its back pocket.

Your used mathematics textbook is also going to make mention of positions in law enforcement. Know, though, that many of these positions are going to require that you have some coding skills. Here, you can look forward to going into data encryption, security, and other similar fields. Depending upon how far you can climb, you might be able to land yourself a job working for the intelligence agency. Truly, you never know!

Finally, you might consider using your mathematics skills to launch a unique, money driven legal career. If you are super good with your numbers, and if you have a career in finance, then you might go into business litigations, helping business settle monetary disputes. This will draw on your knowledge of math and your knowledge of finance, so you’ll find the challenge nice and rewarding.

If none of these careers appeal to you, then you’re going to have to pick up another used mathematics textbook from the store!

While your degree in math may seem limited, it’s actually one of the best degrees that you could ever hope to pursue. If none of this has helped guide you in the right direction, you might consider talking to your guidance counselor at your school. They just may be able to tell you about some more career opportunities in your chosen field.

Math Limerick

Question: Why is this a mathematical limerick?

( (12 + 144 + 20 + 3 Sqrt[4]) / 7 ) + 5*11 = 92 + 0 .

Answer:

A dozen, a gross, and a score,
plus three times the square root of four, divided by seven, plus five times eleven, is nine squared and not a bit more.

---Jon Saxton (math textbook author)
