Hot Question of the Week: How can we make connections to math and the real world

I am 99.9% sure you've been asked "When are we ever going to use this?" at some point during your career as a math teacher. Some where down line the education system failed those students who have asked you this question. It is vital that we make math meaningful and relevant. Our students should walk away from our math classroom knowing that math can be related to some of their most profound pleasures such as poetry, art, music, plans, and animals. Students should understand and know how…See More

Hot Question of the Week: What are some math questions worth asking?

We all know in order for our students to fully understand what they are learning we have to give them an in-depth view of how math is related to the real-world. We also have to ask them questions that will allow them to make this connection on their own. I just finished reading an excellent article:…See More

Welcome to Math Concentration

Hello, My name is Wanda Collins. I am a teacher and devoted mother of three beautiful children: Camia(7), Ciara(5), and Chris, Jr.(2). I love life, being spontaneous, reading, learning new things, and staying busy. My favorite pastime is browsing the internet while eating a snack. I am currently pursuing an M.B.A at Nova Southeastern University.

I have been in education for the past 9 years and I am passionate about teaching. Although teaching is extremely rewarding, I sometimes find myself frustrated with the lack of resources at my disposal as well as my limitations in the classroom(55 minutes of class instruction time given). I created Math Concentration so teachers could share best practices and provide free/low cost resources like budget effective activities, incentives, math centers, classroom management strategies etc.

In addition, Math Concentration was created to provide free tutoring and homework help to middle school students struggling with math. We offer homework help forums, groups, and an online classroom tutoring equipped with a virtual whiteboard. During our online class session, students can ask questions via chat or call in with our meeting number. You can schedule a tutoring session Mon-Fri from 7pm-9pm

I look forward to collaborating with you!

I found this fun activity on Teachers Pay Teachers to reinforce adding and subtracting integers and my students absolutely loved the game and couldn't get enough of it. If it weren't for time limits, I promise you they would have played this game all day. The name of the game is Integer Showdown. It's an Integer…

How to write your best essay for your homework

Whatever the essay you have been asked to write, the key to making it as effective as it can be is to write it as a well structured and well-supported argument. You will find that an ‘argument’ essay is easier to plan, more fulfilling to write and for your teacher (or the examiner). A pleasure to mark (and that’s no bad thing!!).

It’s important to get one thing out of the way at…
